As the red rally descended into chaos in late May with central Bangkok set ablaze and bullets raining down from unidentified snipers, volunteer firefighter Pakorn Katethat had one main concern. His men were the only volunteer firefighters on hand battling side by side with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) units to try and save the iconic Siam Theatre. Ultimately, they failed.
"We weren't afraid of the bullets that flew past us because we had the building to protect us," he said.
"I was more afraid that the red shirts might hijack or destroy my firetrucks and equipment."
There's no financial reward and very little glory for the hundreds of men and women in the volunteer firefighting units around the country, who routinely risk their lives out of a sense of dedication to the communities they live in.
